Overall Top Words Used to Define Relocation Loss

Theme Cloud for Question 2 of my research questionnaire expressing personal experience of loss.

Colour associations made by research participants related to loss and hope.

When approaching my research into the losses experienced by expatriates and their ways of regaining hope, I chose to use a bricolage of methodologies, mirrored by my use of physical bricolage in my artworks. Using the findings from my qualitative and quantitative analysis of my questionnaire Loss Experienced Through Location Questionnaire (2023), answered by a cross-section of 35 expatriate participants, I was able to evaluate and analyze the significant stressors and losses experienced by expatriates during the relocation process. I used MAXQDA software to assist me in the analysis of predominant words and main themes reported on. The visuals generated and depicted here indicate the hierarchy of the number of times a word or theme were used - i.e. the larger the word, the more prevalent its usage.

From the results of the top words used in each of the questions and the most frequently used themes and sub-themes, identified by code segments, my research concluded that the significant losses experienced by expatriates include people, one’s status and sense of identity, resulting in grief, PTSD and feelings of isolation and dislocation. These losses are mitigated and healed over time through counseling and restorative relationships, along with the processing of these losses and a commitment to emotional growth.

I reference these themes and sub-themes, as well as the ten most frequently used words throughout my artworks, either directly or indirectly, to ensure that my work represents the common experiences of relocation loss, and not just my own lived experiences.
